MINI MARATHON Class studies about NYC Marathon
Each child in Andrea Schieck's Second Grade Class earned a set of KidsRunning.com bookmarks for contributing artwork and stories to the Web site. Their theme was a class project on their school mini-marathon held in honor of the NYC and Men's Olympic Trials marathons. Mrs. Schieck's class ran a mile while the rest of the school cheered and handed out out water. The project also integrated nutrition, Greek history, and math skills. It took the class a month to prepare for the mile.

Writing about the Salem Mini-Marathon
 Art by Kristiana
November 16 th was the mini-marathon. I came in 8th place. When I finished, I got a medal. A flying shoe was on the medal. My reading buddy gave me water. I was hot when I was running the mini-marathon. I saw my mommy when I finished. Everybody was cheering for me. It was fun.

...I came in first. Everyone was behind me. It was not too difficult to hold the lead, because I trained well, and believed in myself. Every person got a medal. Noah and Noah both came in 3rd. I had FUN!

When we ran the mini-marathon, we went in and out of the school. Most of the time, I ran with Mr. Shields! It was so much fun! I got a medal that had a flying shoe on it.
A lot of moms and dads came to watch and they held signs that said things like, "GO LAUREN" or "GOOD JOB NEALIE!"

We got medals that have shoes on them. - by Sammy
It was as hard as catching a cheetah. It was as exciting as looking at the Grand Canyon. It was as fun as going on a roller coaster. I had many questions: Would I win? Would I get hurt? Would I get dehydrated?
Let me tell you what actually happened. I lined up at the starting line. I went out too fast. I blew up on my first lap around the field. I couldn't take it. It was just too hard for me. - by Anon - meaning no name on paper!

The day before our mini-marathon my class had a pasta party!
I have cool shiny medal!!! I was not wearing a jacket because when I came to school it was warm. My mouth was cold.

I was wild. I was in 4th place. This made me the second place girl in the marathon. I was FLYING! It was fun! Everyone got a medal. Arianna, my neighbor in Ms. Meehan's class gave me a hug.

Daniel and Sammy fell on the field. They were okay and finished the race. We drew pictures on our numbers. I came in 3rd with Noah. My legs hurt so much that I felt like I couldn't run anymore. I got a medal with a flying shoe on it. ... I made it and finished the 1 mile race.
