Kids' Running Programs: From our Visitors

Our run/walk program at school is going very well. My students are hard at work with their running. This year my students can also run/walk at home and get extra miles. A couple of my students have already run 100 miles this year. About 30 students have already reached the Turner's Runners Marathon Team. There are several teachers and parents who have also topped the 100 mile level. My program involves students, teachers and parents.

This year I have also started a running club that meets after school. When I sent letters home about this I had over 300 students sign up for the running club. I had to limit it to 70 students so that I could manage them. I started with the 5th and 6th graders in hopes that all could would eventually be able to be included. 70 students are tough but it is more manageable than 300. They really enjoy the club and I enjoy helping them with their running.

I am also excited about my program, because our school just received the Georgia Governor's Activity Award for the best PE program that promotes physical fitness in the state of Georgia.

I'm hoping that this Web site will encourage our young people to embrace running, stay healthy and be the best they can be.

Please send us a description of your running program. Help us share with the school and running communities. Please email carol.kids@rodale.com with comments on this article.

If the impetus started by Runner's World continues, 2000-2001 may very well be known as the 'Year of School Running Programs'.
