October 30, 2000 Getting Ready for the Pumpkin Run
 Running to the Bat Station
Even with a night of rain, the brisk New England wind dried the field enough so that we could have our Pumpkin Run without the chance of tracking mud into our brand new school. So out we went and what a great Halloween our kids had. For three years I have had the only running class in our school, but this year, my fourth year of running with my class, the whole first grade has entered the world of running. We have 11 first grades at our school and almost EVERY first grader has signed up for our recess running program headed by Fran Adamcyzk and three parent volunteers. Our kids can just not get enough!
We started with a warm up: a brisk walk to the field, jumping jacks, lots of bouncing, romping and then did some gentle stretching while the parents set up the ghost, Jack-O'Lantern, cat, and bat stations.
Dividing the kids into 4 waves of runners.
Mrs. Milici keeps the kids moving while waiting for their turn to start the fun run.
The first wave was off. First came the Friendly Ghost Station for signatures. Each child had to get 5.

Then it was sprint to the Jack O'Lantern for 'Jumping Jack O'Lanterns'. The kids jumped and clapped the syllables in the phrase, "Jump-ing-Jack-O'-Lan-terns."Then it was run to the Cat Walk for some creative walking (or crawling). Finally it was a long run to the Bat Station for some bat play.

Happy Halloween! You can't wear these kids out.
Going in with a goodie bag and a leaf to draw in her Run the Seasons chart.
The Pumpkin Run is a great addition to our
Run the Seasons Program. We will have two more fun runs this year.
Thank you to Runner's World for the Running Numbers. We could have made our own out of construction paper, but they would not have held up during our run. The real running numbers are the way to go. They are made out of a sturdy material that will withstand any kind of weather.
I'm hoping that this Web site will encourage our young people to embrace running, stay healthy and be the best they can be. Please send us a description of your running program. Help us share with the school and running communities.
Please email carol.kids@rodale.com with comments on this article.
If the impetus started by Runner's World continues, 2000-2001 may very well be known as the 'Year of School Running Programs'.
