Imagine Teaching a Full Day of School and THEN Running the Boston Marathon
Response to the Interview of Jim Hansen, Teacher and Runner

by Addie Gaines

Dear Administrators,

I am writing this letter in behalf of Jim Hansen. I read his story on the website Kid's Running Online.

I was impressed by his dedication to his students, school and to his sport. His story was an inspiring tale of perseverance and self discipline.

These are qualities that we should, as educators, be striving to impart to our children. The children in your district have a wonderful opportunity to learn this first-hand from a beloved teacher. Values are "caught" more than "taught" and the students will learn much from watching him participate and cheering him on.

Please consider allowing him a personal day to use to run the Boston Marathon. It seems to me that personal days are just that, personal, and he should be allowed to use them in any way he chooses. He is choosing to challenge himself and grow personally. He is a credit to your district and to the teaching profession.

Sincerely,
Addie Gaines
