Lanigan Elementary School
Takes an Imaginary Trek to Disney World!

Running in the Snow while Dreaming of Sunny Florida

It was just about 8 months ago when Carlo Cuccaro first wrote to KidsRunning.Com for advice on starting an elementary running program. Cuccaro, school psychologist and Christopher Harvey, physical education teacher, wanted to start a program to help kids stay healthy, fit, and enjoy exercise.

Because of Cuccaro's many questions, KidsRunning.Com wrote Best Practices, Part 1 | and Best Practices, Part 2 to help people who wanted a kids' club but just had no idea where to start.

Kids, Parents, and Teachers are treking around the elementary school on their way to DisneyWorld.
The kids calculate and log their mileage and running pace, integrating mathematics. They also write about their running in running journals, thus integrating language arts.

Both Cuccaro and Harvey have seen improvement in many of the kids' behavior, academics, and self images since the onset of their program, which just goes to show if you search good practices for kids, adapt them to make them fit your situation, and believe in what you are doing, your progam will be a success.
KidsRunning.Com can't count the number of new running programs that have popped up in the country this year. We've heard from hundreds of people who planned on starting them. Many credit the September 2000 RW Article 'A' for Effort" by John Brant and others just say that they were influenced by KidsRunning.Com. In any event, it certainly has been a great year for kids and running. Please email goodrow@infionline.net with comments on this article.
