I work for the YMCA and am the Activities Manager (sounds grander than it is). I am an athletics coach specialising in the high jump but also coach middle and cross country running. I am a member of Cleethorpes AC and used to run a bit, at not too high a standard I might add. 1:58 800m (Rich Kenah, US Oympian, 1:43 800m) and 56sec 400m.

I work in many schools in my area with the biggest input being athletics to kids up to 11 years old. I also do some work in middle and high schools with athletics mostly specialist work.

I also coach basketball, field hockey and teach kids how to become sports leaders in schools. Once a week I coach field hockey with the Grimsby Hockey club (Juniors).

The youngest age I work with is 6 year olds, also in schools., teaching them athletics, basketball and hockey mostly although I do other things as well such as playground games.

My background is ex forces as an engineer which I followed for a short time after I came out of the army. I tried a number of jobs, teaching engineering and working in the retail business. I qualified as a youth worker some years ago and worked voluntarily in youth clubs then as a volunteer with the YMCA which as a result gained me my present position.

The programme has proved so successful that we received a national award for this work. We now have children from aged 6 years of age and upwards visiting us to carry out this type of number work but of course we have to modify the events and introduce new once that they are capable of doing like target ball, beanbag toss and other simple measuring and counting games.

We have made maths fun and enjoyable and of course healthy. I hope that this is of interest to you and perhaps your site visitors. Best wishes to all the visitors of KidsRunning.Com.
KidsRunning.Com loves English 'maths'. It is full of developmental activities that encorporate art, graphing, creativity, writing , and exploration, but the real beauty of English 'maths' is that the activities drive kids to understand the structure behind the 'maths'. I'm getting my old Nuffield texts out from the 70's and using them in my classroom today!!!
And one more word, KidsRunning.Com would like everyone to put England in their prayers and or thoughts today. Let's hope that the devastation being caused by the Foot and Mouth Virus quickly comes to an end.
