It's fun and easy to make a KIDDIE CHAIN to get a quick approximation of a 50m route. 1. You need to take 50 kindergarten or first grade students outside or to the gym.
2. The kids form a circle and hold hands.
3. They carefully step back to make the largest circle they can while still holding hands. This is your route!
Only have 20 kids? Do what I did. Line them up. Have them hold hands, and spread out as far as they can while still holding hands. Then line them up on the other side of where the last kid was standing. Then repeat one more time with only 10 of the kids until you've mapped the distance of 50 kids.
Make this a math lesson. Take a meter stick or measuring wheel and find out how close you were.
We had fun with this. We predicted how many cm off we would be. We went to the gym and made our kiddie chain. Then we measured our route with a measuring 50m tape to find out how close we were.
If you're a teacher, it's difficult not to turn any experience into a teaching/learning activity. If you're a runner, it's just as hard not to turn every learning experience into a running activity.
