May 24 , 2004GOAL It's week 8 and we've met our goal of 500 miles; early. Where the kids' folders once clearly showed the hundred blocks, you now have to look hard to find the math, for the charts are full of artwork added each week. We have 2 weeks left and we'll all be more than ready for the 1-K fun run on our final day. Each week, we do our fastest running after a couple of warm-up laps. If the kids remember this simple lesson then the 1-K will be fun for all. NEW GOAL Only 2 weeks left and we need a new goal. We'll focus on healthy snacking. Each child has completed the mileage, and about 80% have been bringing in healthy foods to club. To reach our new goal should be simple. We need 1 healthy snack/child. But of course, just like the mileage, we'll try to exceed our original goal. Next week, when the children arrive, there will be new folders for them to create their "healthy snack" charts and a new bulletin board promoting healthy eating. NOTES FROM PARENTS By far, the most frequent comment from parents has been that children have begun to eat healthier, frequently requesting nutritious snacks at home. Successful physical activity and healthy eating go hand-in-hand. HOMEWORK The children will be assigned "optional" summer homework. They will be given the addresses of our sponsors so that, if they wish, they can write a thank-you note to let our sponsors know how valuable the club has been to them. Suggested topics include: just a simple "thank you", mini-stories about how the club has changed their lives, and a mention of what they enjoyed most at the club.
