A cliche to an adult is an overused expression, but to a child it's close to poetry. Children enjoy learning what cliches mean. To some, learning to interpret cliches comes naturally, while others don't understand the nuances of our language, without direct teaching. Here is a list of activity related cliches and some simple sentences for even your youngest children to read.

- a hop, skip, and a jump away
I see Dan. I can run to Dan. Dan is just a hop, skip, and a jump away.

- hop like a rabbit
Jan can hop. She can hop like a rabbit. Hop, Jan, hop!

- swim like a fish
Kim can swim. Kim can swim well. Kim swims like a fish.

- run like a deer
Run fast. Run quick. Run like a deer.

- faster than a Jack Rabbit
Sam runs fast. He runs faster than me. He runs faster than a Jack Rabbit!

- jump for joy
The boy got a new toy. He is so happy. He will jump for joy!

- over the hill
Jill is old but she still runs! She is not over the hill yet.

- over the hump
We ran up the big hill. We did the hardest part. We're over the hump.

- free as a bird
It's Saturday. It's summer. I'm free as a bird.

- rat race
- work like a dog
- busy as a bee
- when the cat's away the mice will play
- slither like a snake
- early bird catches the worm
- eager beaver
- run with the hare, hunt with the hounds
- quick as lightning
- slow as molasses in January
- climb like a monkey
- as the crow flies
- strong as a lion
- put a tiger in your tank
- climb that mountain when you come to it
- tiptoe around him
- kick up your heels
- monkey see, monkey do
- 2 shakes of a lamb's tail
- have a field day
- scamper like a mouse
- walk the walk
