Recess Mileage Club ![]()
Dear KidsRunning.com,Being inspired by the information on your Web site, I have started a kids running program at Westside Elementary School located in Greenbrier, AR. We call ourselves the Westside Panther Tracks Club due to the fact that our school mascot is the Panther. I started out with third graders only because I wasn't sure what the participation level would be. I am happy to say that out of 90 third graders, 85 students are participating in the program. Our Club meets Monday, Wednesday, & Friday during our afternoon recess at 1:45 p.m. We only have 15 minutes on Mondays & Wednesdays, but on Fridays we were given permission to extend our time to 30 minutes. Our program officially kicked off in October 2003 and as of this date our club has run over 1,200 miles. We selected a running destination of the Grand Canyon and at a distance of approximately 1,300 miles, we aren't far from reaching that goal. I have contacted the Grand Canyon Park Assoc. to see if they might be willing to send some little souvenirs to give the children when we reach our goal. We earn different types of tokens for mileage goals and these can be placed on a necklace or on the children's shoe strings. We ordered them from Fitness Finders. I am also involved in a kids marathon program called the "Little Rockers Marathon" which can be found at www.littlerockmarathon.com. All of the different kids running programs will be culminating into this event which will be held on March 7, 2004. We've secured several sponsors for the event, so the cost to the kids is only $8. Thanks so much for your Web site which gave me the inspiration to get these programs going. Keep up the wonderful work. Thanks, Terri A.
