MANCHESTER ROAD RACE 2002
Holiday Special by Carol Goodrow

amby2002 Race Winners: Andrew Letherby 22:03, Australia, Amy Rudolph 24:25, Providence, RI

It's Thanksgiving Day. Runners arrive in droves, from all over the world, to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season with their favorite activity. Running! The temperature never rises above the teens, but the spectators are still faithful. Even the non-running pets attended bundled in wool sweaters. KidsRunning.Com attended as press this year to interview runners and spectators alike about running, the holiday season, and kid tips.

ambyINTERVIEW AMBY BURFOOT
(9 time winner of the Manchester Road Race and 40 time runner)
KR: Hi Amby! Happy Thankgiving! What are you thankful for today?
AMBY: I'm thankful that my family and loved ones have been in good health and that we are all going to be together this Thanksgiving.

KR: What are you wishing for this Christmas?
AMBY: World Peace

KR: Do you have a FUN kid tip for a cold running day?
AMBY: Try blowing into your shoes and socks before you put them on, to warm them up. This might help keep your feet warm. I'm trying this today.

KR REASON TO RUN
28. "Run with the Best"
You can run at an event with Olympians, world record holders, and race winners...and they, in turn, can run with you!

Amby ran a 32:31 this year and started on the front line with the 4 minute guys. This is something to see! Rumor has it that next year Amby might be wearing Number 1. Next year I'll be running the Manchester Road Race (starting in the back of the pack) and I'll be wearing number 14,000. But whether you are wearing number 1 or number 14,000 or any of the numbers in between, this race will still be LOTS of FUN!

rogersINTERVIEW NICK ROGERS
( 2000 Olympic Trials 5000M, 3rd place; Champion 2001 U.S. 10k, Manchester PR 21:42)
KR: Happy Thanksgiving, Nick! Could you let the kids of KR know what you are thankful for today?
NICK: Just the basics; friends, family and that I'm 100% healthy and fit this year.

KR: Helping kids stay healthy and fit is one of the main goals of the kidsrunning.com Web site. What's your best kid tip for staying healthy and fit?
NICK: Well, I'm not injured and I'm not sick. Tips for kids? Rest! Make sure to go easy or slow your pace when your body is hurting. You don't have to run hard every day.

KR: What are you wishing for this Christmas?
NICK: Olympics 2004! I went in 2000. I want to make it 2 in a row.

29. "Enjoy the Fans and Hoopla"
Clap for the bagpipes, thank the cheering fans, and appreciate the costumed runners.

Nick has a little advice for elite runners running this race. Run it fast the first time, then run it again and enjoy the fans. This race is a lot of fun. Has Nick ever actually run the double loop? Maybe next year!
