October 27th was probably the best day of my life. At around 9:00 my dad and I went to Kelley's pace, the local running store owned by Johnny Kelley. We went to meet Frank Shorter, Johnny Kelley, and Amby Burfoot. I brought my Boston Marathon book, and they were all very happy to sign it. Afterwards, I went home, and got ready for the to run the Mystic Places Marathon Kids race 2 miler. Once again Amby, Frank, and Johnny were there to start the races. I've run 5Ks, 5 milers, and a 15K. So two miles felt like a warm up. When the gun went off I quickly jumped out into the lead. By the 1/2 mile mark, I had about 30 seconds on everyone else. At the turnaround my lead was huge. with a quarter mile to go someone yelled to me "You're at 5:30 pace." I was amazed. I finished first, in a time of 11:16. I was so happy with the result, and my parents were so proud. After, I got my picture with Frank Shorter, Johnny Kelley, and Amby. Johnny and Amby especially told me what fine form I had finishing. Everyone was so excited for me , especially Johnny! Second place came in a time of 12:59. I shook his hand and then discussed race distances with Amby. When I left, later, I realized that today was possibly the biggest day in my running career so far. Click to see Ryan discussing race distances with Amby. |
