Catskills Youth Running Club
Mile Championship Series

Challenge yourself to champion, gold, silver, bronze, or participation medalist. A model club program.

There is way more to the Catskills Youth Running Club than I can tackle today. It's a model club with something for every kid who loves to run; from a kid officered club to a kid authored newsletter, to USATF Junior Olympic Competitions and IronKid meets to a running festival. If you need to liven up your club events, this is a good club to contact for ideas.

I'd like to tell you about their Mile Championship Series which is just a small part of what they have going on but it's put together in a way that each kid can be achieve a goal, be it participative or competitive.

There are ten one-mile events in various New York locations in the fall, spring and summer. Here are their names: Vernal Equinox, Pennant Race, Kids' Classic, Ray Caddy, Summer Solstice, Mid Summer, Mad Dash, Kidsathlon, fran O'Neil, and Commitment to Kids. Cool!

Next the Goal: to encourage participation in local races

Finally the Awards:

Champion: Ran in all 10 races

Gold Medalist: 9 races

Silver Medalist: 8 races

Bronze Medalist: 7 races

Participation Medalist: 6 races

They've thought of everything to help kids reach their goals. They allow for the circumstance where you might be travelling by giving one Wild Card Mile where a child can substitute a race from another series for one of the races of the CYRC.

And if you are fast as can be, don't fret...they also give out JO age group awards to the fastest finishers, 3 deep in each category.

This series gets KidsRunning.Com's highest praise for motivating all kids to run regardless of their ability, by providing them with incentives appropriate for their performance and hard work.

This club is a member of the rrca.org and usatf.org.

And of course they have events for the younger ones ... shorter distances, lots of fun and mascots too. Email catskillskidd@aol.com or visit their site at http://hometown.aol.com/cyrcad/myhomepage/teamletter.html for more. Or see a fabulous feature on their Kidsathlon on KidsRunning.Com.

A series is a great motivator to kids to keep training and keep running. It teaches perseverance and goal setting.
