New Brunswick Campaign for Literacy and Physical Fitness

Challenge yourself to gold, silver, or bronze levels. Or just get started in literacy and physical activity.

Hello Kid Runners!

My name is Kathy and I live in New Brunswick, Canada, where I am a school librarian. I have 2 kids, a 9 1/2 year-old son who runs with me (that's how I found this cool site), and an 11 year-old daughter who is on a swim team.

Our province is hosting the 2003 Canada Winter Games, in a city called Campbellton. Some of the sports included are archery, squash, gymnastics, fencing and of course skiing and skating!

Our provincial government has decided that we need to work on our literacy (reading, writing , math & stuff) and our levels of activity, because, well, we just don't do enough, so it has come up with a pretty cool program!

It is a challenge of sorts. You set a goal for yourself for both, say, reading and physical activity for an 8 or 12 week period. Lets say you're aiming for the gold level, you'll read 360 minutes a week and you'll do 360 minutes of physical activity a week. Oh, you prefer silver, well, it's 180 minutes of reading and 180 minutes of physical activity, and bronze is 100 minutes of reading and physical activity. You get the idea!

But if you are just starting out in getting active, maybe only 60 minutes is what you think you can do, that's ok too. You set your own goal, and if you decide later that you want to change it, that's fine. You can do it as one person, a family or a group. There are all sorts of links to help with ideas to help you along. I do believe that this program is only opened to the people of our province, but talk to your teachers, coaches, and librarians Maybe you can start a similar program!
