KR MINI CHAT WITH DAN BROWNE
KidsRunning met up with Dan Browne, after his second place finish, at the Manchester Road Race for a KR Mini Chat and this is what Dan had to say.
I loved running as a kid. Starting at the age of 7, my dad took me to the same Easter Day mile fun run every year. I lived in Oregon at the time and spent most of my time playing soccer and other sports but that yearly fun run was special. It was just as exciting for me to run those races as it is to race now. I got faster every year and used to come in first place in my age group.
FYI, Dan Browne won the USA Half-Marathon Championship in Parkersburg, W.VA in August 2001. His prize was $6000.
DAN'S INSPIRATION
Hey, thanks to Dan Browne's dad for taking him to this same fun run every year. Many runners have that one special race to look forward to and they return to it every year. Dan is still a young man but just maybe, someday in the future, Dan will take his own children to that Easter Day fun run in Oregon.

MAKING HISTORY, RUNNING MANCHESTER AGAIN! KR also met up with Amby Burfoot, role model for our Running with Family Dream Big theme. Please see our Dream Big Page. Amby has run the Manchester Road Race 39 times. Here he is with Charley Robbins. We all know that Amby is great legend. He's a nine time winner of the Manchester Road Race, a winner of the 1968 Boston Marathon, and the editor of the world's top selling Runner's World magazine, but he's still #2 to Charley Robbins at Manchester, for Charley has run this race 50 consecutive times.
RUNNING GEAR
Note Charley's shoes. They're not the high tech standard for running, that is unless you are running in the water. We marvel at this man who must have perfect biomechanics, for often midway in the race he takes his shoes off and runs barefoot. He's 81 years old and still running.
Note Amby's mittens. Most people can race comfortably in shorts down to about 40 degrees, but the fingers and toes get the least amount of blood circulation and lose heat very quickly.
Many people are more comfortable keeping their hands toasty warm even on a mildly cool day. Mittens do the trick easily. They have plenty of space for the air to circulate, keeping your fingers surrounded by warmth.
Mittens and shorts are high style on this Web site for our little graphic running kids wear them most of the time.

The Manchester Road Race committee asked Amby to present this winter jacket at the onset of the award ceremony. This will keep Charley warm for the winter, but probably not while he's running. For most weather conditions, we recommend light layers to keep you comfy outdoors.

THANKSGIVING
Kids, it's important to remember that this great road race is in celebration of Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims journeyed to our land in poor conditions. They planned on traveling to a little village in Virginia, but by mistake ended up at what is now Provincetown, MA. At that time Provincetown was inhabited only by our Native Americans. The Pilgrims explored the area to find woods and more woods. They then traveled to what is now Plymouth, MA and built their village. We are thankful for the Pilgrims' hard work, and for the Native Americans who helped them survive. We recall that the Pilgrims came here to practice religious freedom, a custom that is one of the foundations of our great country. Please think of many things for which to be thankful, every day of the year.
