Letters to Amby From America to Australia
 "Olympic Gold"
| Dear Mr. Burfoot,
Our class has been learning about Australia and the Olympics taking place there. We are in first grade and our teacher is Mrs. Bosco. Last week Mrs. Goodrow invited our class to participate in an event called the Kangaroo Hop. We had a lot of fun! At the end of the event the students from Mrs. Goodrow's class gave us each a gold medal.
We were wondering if you have seen a gold medal at the Olympics. What is it like? Is it made out of real gold?
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bosco's First Grade Class
P.S. Mrs. Goodrow would like to publish your reply on kidsrunning.com
Dear Class,
No, I have not seen a gold medal. I have seen lots of photos of them, but I have never actually
seen one myself.
Yes, they are made of gold. But that's not the important thing. The important thing is that they are won
in a fair, honest competition among the best athletes in the world. There are athletes from 200 countries
participating here in Sydney.
The winner can say, "On this day, I was the best in the world at my event." And that's something quite
unique--to be able to say that you are the best.
I hope you enjoy the Olympic Games.
Sincerely, Amby Burfoot

There are all kinds of medals that are awarded at running events. Sometimes medals are given to every finisher. Other times only the race winners receive medals. Both kinds of medals are significant and usually cherished by the runners who receive them. I keep my favorite medal on a teddy bear that I named, "Marathon". Why not let kidsrunning.com know where you keep your medals?
Art by Brittany, Michelle, Ben, and Katie from Mrs. Bosco's class. Note to Katie from the editor: If I won an Olympic medal, I'd want it to be heart shaped too...and tinted red.
