HAPPY FEET LUNCH CONTESTS
Happy Feet Club and Breakaway Books Promote Healthy Eating

Healthy Lunches

Thank you to logoBreakaway Books for donating a case of Happy Feet, Healthy Food books to encourage healthy eating for our schoolchildren.

For printable footprint charts and Happy Feet Lunch blanks, T-shirt design, and sample of a Happy Feet ribbon, please go to The Happy Feet, Healthy Food Kids' Club page. This link will also take you to the Happy Feet after-school club. Since one of the purposes of the club was to promote healthy eating, the idea of a school-wide lunch contest was a natural extension of the club. Check out the club for a better understanding of our contest and philosophy.

Happy Feet Lunch Contests
Having a contest is a great way to get kids involved in healthy eating. Follow our lead. Have your own Happy Feet Lunch Contest at your school. Choose your winner. Name the winning lunch after the child and put it on your school menu. Give that child a free lunch and Happy Feet book.

THE CONTESTS
Would you like to promote healthy eating at your school lunch program? Then have a "Happy Feet Lunch Contest". We will provide a "Happy Feet, Healthy Food" book as a prize to the child at your school who designs a winning lunch.

signsHERE'S HOW THIS WORKS
1. Encourage your school lunch program to run a Happy Feet Lunch Contest asking the student body to design a healthy lunch.

The lunch should include a fresh fruit, vegetable(s), something whole grain (ex. brown rice, whole-grain roll), low-fat dairy, lean protein, etc. The food should be appealing to children - perhaps with a theme or something very yummy.
This idea came from my after-school club where the kids fill in these blanks for footprints (points). Happy Feet Blanks

2. Please use school letterhead stationery and send a letter of intent to hold a Happy Feet Lunch contest to:

Carol Goodrow

PO Box 209
Fiskdale, MA 01518

We have 44 free books to award. They will be awarded on a first-come-first serve basis. Include your email address on your letter and we will notify you to let you know that the a book prize is still available. If so, we will send you one Happy Feet, Healthy Food book to offer as a prize to the winning child.

3. Print our contest entry blank and make it yours. Fill in the missing information to complete your form. Make copies and hand them out to the students at your school. The students can enter the contest at school or at home.

4. Then choose your winner.

happy kidAFTER THAT?
Include the winning Happy Feet Lunch on your school menu. Name it after the winning child. Celebrate healthy eating at your school. Choose lunches that include whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, low-fat dairy, and or lean protein. Encourage the children to be creative, try new foods, and think healthy.

MAKING IT FUN
Healthy eating can be a lot of fun. If you believe kids will eat healthy foods they will.

Why not do what we did and line the cafeteria walls with photos of the teachers, school principal, superintendent, and other faculty members eating Happy Feet lunches?

And if you can't buy a school lunch? You can just make your own. Just follow the formula: fruit, vegetable, water or milk and at least one other VERY healthy food (ex: whole-grain, low-fat dairy, or lean protein).
