We can search the Internet for training charts and plans, buy books galore, but sometimes good old-fashioned common sense is the best way to create best practices for kids running.

Mom Knows Best
by Lane's Mom

laneLane, four-years old is running a half-mile kids' fun run in Minnesota. He took the advice from his mom, the other runner in the family and ran a little slower when he got tired. Lane was the youngest person running. All kids' names were announced as they crossed the finish line and each received a ribbon. Afterwards he enjoyed the bagels and juice offered to all the runners.

Lane loves to run kids' races, probably because of the same reason his mom loves to run; running feels great. He and his brother, who is seven, run about five races a year. His brother will run a mile to practice for a race, but usually just being a kid is practice enough.

Lane is named after the late bull rider Lane Frost. He ran the world's largest youth run last weekend at the Fargo Dome- The Youth Run at the Fargo Marathon.
