LOOK AND SEE HOW THEY RAN
Peter DeLaCerda
DeLaCerda is a Spanish name which is thought to denote royalty, with the translation being 'of the pigs' or 'of the horse's tail'. Although Peter was born in America, he is proud of his Spanish heritage and wishes he knew more of the Spanish language. The graphic was adapted from the ORIGINAL 1 MILE Chart in our Rainbow Cave Ribbon Program

KR: Which sports did you play at the age of ten?
PETER:
I played soccer, baseball, wrestling, flag football, basketball and running (didn't compete on a team until high school). I never ran youth track. I just went to road races with my dad.
KR: Did you participate in any training for running? PETER:
I didn't start running until late 7th grade with my dad. My training was very little until I was in 8th grade and I would run anywhere between 3-6 miles a day just about every day. Running was a sport I felt a great compassion for and I still like to go out for a run almost every day.
KR: Did you run often during your playtime? PETER: I played tag a lot when I was younger. Especially when we had big family gatherings and all the cousins would come. We would play any chance we had.
I would run every day and also would play pickup basketball games. I love sports and would do any sport so I guess I would spend hours and hours playing and running every day and even more so during the summer.
KR: Was your dad a runner?
PETER: My dad was an avid runner in the 80's running many road races. I started going with him when I was in 7th grade and one time I jumped into a 5k and ran like 25-26 minutes. After that I was hooked and would go with him all the time. I started training and slowly my times began to improve. I never ran any fun runs as I recall. I just ran the 5k's.
KR: Can you tell me about one of the athletes who inspired you? PETER:
Said Auoita was a runner from Morocco. He ran in the 80's and held world records from 1500m-5000m indoor and I believe outdoor. He ran with such passion and pain in his face and I remember as a boy seeing him just giving all he had race after race. He had speed, endurance and power. He was simply AWESOME.
FACTS
BIRTHDAY: October 1, 1971
PLACE OF BIRTH: San Fernando, California
HOW ISAIAH GOT HIS MIDDLE NAME
PETER: I have two boys. Isaiah and Elijah. Isaiah, before he was born, did not have a middle name picked out. I went to be a rabbit at the Pittsburgh Marathon and they asked some questions in a interview and wanted to know what Isaiah's middle name was going to be. I told them "Peter". After it was printed in the paper we had no choice but to leave it as "Peter".
HOBBIES
PETER: I enjoy paintball games, eating, coaching, teaching, going to church and relaxing or vacationing with the family.
KR:
We love the sound of your last name. It's almost poetic. Is there any 'history' behind it?
PETER: I will tell you briefly what people have told me about my last name. The name obviously is from Spain; Castillan I believe. Anyhow, when the Spanish came to South America, mainly Mexico, they intermarried the indiginous people and gave them their last names. They say my last name means "of the pigs" or some say "of the horses tail" and I heard one or two other translations which I can't recall, but anyhow my ancestors had something to do with horses or pigs or ranchers maybe,I don't really know. A guy from Spain told me that it was a name of nobility or royalty. So for what it is worth that's that story.
GREATEST RUNNING ACHIEVEMENTS: I was 2nd at the Olympic Marathon Men's Trials in 2000.
