LOOK AND SEE HOW THEY RAN
Libbie Hickman

Toys are great substitutes for the real pets we wish for.
The graphic was adapted from the KR April Calendar page.
LIBBIE: My favorite children's book was and is Curious George. I can't wait to read it to my daughter. Many of my parents' stories of me as a child include my insatiable desire for a pet monkey. Every year I expected one under the tree but was always disappointed, though the monkey dolls would console me.

KR: Which sports did you play at the age of ten?
LIBBIE: At 10, I wasn't participating too much in organized athletics. A couple of years later I played basketball and began to run track. At 10 I would follow my older brothers to their activities: baseball, football, etc. and run around with them after practice and games.

KR: Did you participate in any training for running?
LIBBIE: My father would time me in sprints of 100-200 meters around our block. I would often race my brothers and him. No specific training except to run on the track occasionally when my parents would go to run.

KR: Did you run often during your playtime?
LIBBIE: I ran a lot during my playtime. I would chase fly balls at my brothers' baseball practice and I spent a lot of time messing around with them outside.

KR: How many hours did you spend running?
LIBBIE: I have no idea, although I was a very active kid and was running around outside at school and home every day. My first memories of really enjoying running are of playing with my brothers and my dad timing me outside when I was ten.
