LOOK AND SEE HOW THEY RAN
Alan Webb
Runners often have good luck 'rituals'. Alan's is really sweet. ALAN: I like to eat a bowl of ice cream the night before a big race; sort of a superstition AND mint chocolate chip is my favorite flavor!
KR Mini-Interview
KR: Which sports did you play at the age of ten?
ALAN:
At ten I was on the swim team, and played soccer and basketball.
KR: Did you participate in any training for running? ALAN:
Not on any type of regular basis.
KR: Did you run often during your playtime? ALAN: No, but I would always get excited for the gym class mile run for I have always been a miler at heart.
KR: How many hours did you spend running?
ALAN: 5-10 hours per week (estimate)
KR: What is your favorite book? ALAN: My favorite book would have to be Life at These Speeds by Jeremy Jackson. I would recommend this book for high school students or adults. Jeremy Jackson, the author of "Life at These Speeds" wrote me a letter
asking if I was willing to read his book and if I would give a
quote if I liked it.
I wrote him back and said, "Yes!" so he sent me a copy
and I read it over winter break. I was nursing an achilles tendon injury at
the time so it really hit home because it is a book that puts things into
perpective. What I got from it was that running is important but becoming
comfortable with who you are as a person is just as important.
I don't think
it has even been officially published yet (it was released June 2002 and is now available). Here is an excerpt from the book jacket: "As Kevin enters high school, his memory of the last six months is gone. Now
a track phenom, he breaks numerous records while he struggles with the
past. Slowly he begins to remember, but just as he is starting to feel
himself again, another terrible tragedy enters his life." KR: Alan, thanks for this sneak preview of Photo Victor Sailer, PhotoRun, Courtesy of RUNNER'S WORLD
