For some ridiculous reason, in the year 2001, some people still believe that girls can't perform as well as boys do in sports activities. Well, that's certainly not the case with the girls in the It's "Funner" to be a Runner program. I have had the program for 23 years and the girls have always been right on par with the boys----there has never been an exception. You may ask, "So what?"

First of all, this fact that I am presenting to you certainly proves that with 10 and 11 year olds who run, there is without a doubt any question that the girls are AT LEAST equal in ability with the boys. Now, what does this mean. It allows the boys to learn to respect the girls, be their friends, and pull for each other. I can tell you that the boys and girls have always gotten along well together during the years that I have had the program.

It's nice to experience what I have since 1980. Nothing changes. The running simply gives all the kids a great deal of confidence to be successful with all the other things that life offers to them. This, I have found, is especially the case with the girls. Their confidence level rises as the weeks begin to unfold in September.

The Saturday before Thanksgiving, my It's "Funner" to be a Runner kids entered a 10K, along with a few hundred others, mostly adults. All the kids finished with a smile, a lot of confidence and with a lot of respect for all who ran. Guess what? Our first two finishers were girls. Teresa finished with a 47:24 and Shelbi finished with a 48:54. The rest of the kids finished anywhere from 52:00 to 1 hour & 5 minutes. They all felt very good about themselves and were excited about returning to school on Monday with their race T-shirt on. The girls were especially proud of themselves and the boys were proud of the girls too!!! GIRLS, GO FOR IT BECAUSE IT'S "FUNNER" TO BE A RUNNER!!!

Don't hesitate to get in touch if you feel I can help. Email saccone@gwise.cajon.k12.ca.us or phone 1- (619) 670-4555).

Good luck,
