THANK A TEACHER, THANK A KID
Message on kindness for parents, kids, and teachers

After the Fun Run
by Carol Goodrow

It's the end of the year; June 4 to be exact, and this little child is all decked out after running his first mile. He has his Run, Spot, Run! hat on. Yeah, it's against the rules to wear hats in school. It's an old custom of respect, but today the rule doesn't hold. In fact all week I'll be encouraging the kids to wear their Run, Spot, Run! hats in the classroom. I might wear mine too!

Look at his arm. He's tattooed with USATF decals from our fun run. One wouldn't do, so he has two. And he sports his tee from our favorite Web site, KidsRunning.Com, of course. He's a miler now and with that badge comes pride for a young child. But even better, his first mile was run on a trail, on a rainy day.

On my desk is a flower, bought and given to me by a little girl, also a proud miler. It's a beautiful flower that says to me, her teacher, "Thank you being you."

Being a teacher isn't easy in 2001. We have a huge curriculum which is too vast to get into any area in depth. We teach kids of all ranges and deal with parents with different expectations, but we manage to help most kids make good progress as the year moves on and as 'running' teachers we try to give kids something special for life; an appreciation and means to health and fitness.

If you're a parent reading this, stop and think for a second, then thank a teacher today for what they have done special for your child, and if you're a teacher, take a good look at your kids. Then thank a kid for the warmth and sunshine that the child brings into your life.

Swamped at my desk, checking tests to make sure all sections were completed, I'm surprised by kids who used the markers and white boards to write a message that they knew would melt my heart.

A moment is never wasted when it is spent on being kind. Say a kind word to or about someone close to your child.

BTW, we had our Classroom/Family fun run on Saturday. If you haven't seen the feature please visit Run, Spot, Run!
