Thanks for putting Pete's article on your site. It looks great. I know Pete can't do a lot while he is
teaching,
but his program is so worthwhile that I think he should take it on the
road.
More people need to see what is possible for kids and Pete is one heck
of a
good teacher besides-other teachers have a lot to learn from him. He
teaches
the kids so many things within the concept of running-civic
responsibility,
nutrition, manners, social skills, presentation skills.....it goes on
and on
and it is truly a comprehensive approach. (I knew he had a great running
program, but I had no idea I would be so impressed with the side
benefits of
what he is doing.)
The kids, as you can imagine were great. Our manager,
Randy Evetts was talking with Teresa (the one who ran the 10 mile) and
was
asking if she really ran that much every day....of course she said yes
and
asked him if he ran. He said that he couldn't run very well....She told
him
"Sure you can. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other!"
(He
tells that story all the time, now.)
If I am able I'd like to find a way to bring him back to do some longer
workships for teachers here...if I can find grant money.
Anyway, we are already planning our next "Sports and Fitness for the
health
of It" symposium. Getting kids (and adults-especially families) running
is a
passion of mine so if you have suggestions for other great speakers, let
me
know as you think of them.
I think we will also focus a bit on type two diabetes for the medical
tract next year. The statistics are very alarming. I don't know if you
know
a lot about diabetes, but type two used to be a disease of older folks.
It is now being seen in children . The cause, of course is our sedentary
lifestyle and poor nutrition.
A diabetes educator friend of mine has seen 4 kids with it in the last
three months here. Our area has a very high rate of diatetes anyway with
the
high hispanic population....and sadly there are very few children here
who
run...many times my kids are the only ones in a race....I am determined
to
change that.
