And more from Huey:
This (book) list has taken me about 6 years. I began collecting books for kids after a professor at The University of West Florida encouraged me to find some books that my students might enjoy.

I have spent the time on this because most of the books I could find in our school library were really boring and our students didn't check them out.

Here are some of the strategies that I have used and shared over the years:
READING STRATEGIES
1. Highlight in your school newsletter _____

2. Physical Education/Wellness/Safety Book of the Week _____

2. Late Bus _____

3. Classroom teachers-certain grade levels _____

4. First few weeks of school-extreme heat-K and 1st _____

5. Half days at school-Reading Day/Older students read to younger students _____

6. Let students know you read _____

7. Story time in the library _____

8. After School Care _____

9. Inside Field Day for Wellness/5 stations and one included Reading for Physical Education/Media Specialist _____

10. Displays/Indoor room/hallway shelves _____

11. School Reading Days _____

There is no doubt that books can leave an impression on children. I didn't become a regular reader until I started jogging as an adult at 24. I truly believe that the rhythm from running helped me to become a much better reader. Today, I spend a lot of time on the Internet and in bookstores everywhere I go looking for books. My wife and I enjoy traveling across the United States and she knows we must find a bookstore or two before we leave.
