logo Running is one least expensive sports to get into. Specialized equipment needed? A well fitting pair of running shoes. Moderate expense.

What else? A sense of adventure. For this, no cost at all.

edCost of Training by Coach Ed Poirier

Dear Ed,
I'm working on a fourth-grade project about what it would take to become an Olympic athlete in running.

I need to find how much it costs to start training. I know you need running clothes and shoes. Are there any other expenses I need to save up for?

Thank you very much,
Megan

Hi Megan,

My favorite letter all year!

One of the big benefits of running is all you need is a shirt, a pair of summer shorts or winter running pants, and a well-fitting pair of running shoes. Shirts, shorts, and pants you already have, so the only expense is for the running shoes.

For a fourth-grade student shoes will cost about $25 to $50 and will last until you grow out of them so maybe 2 pair a year. That's it.

Get those shoes and start training. I'll look for you in the 2020 or 2024 Olympics!

Go play,
Coach Ed
