Dear Carol,
Hi! I found your Web site and am anxious to get some info if possible. I am 39 year old
Ironman triathlete from Florida. I train
many adults (with which I am familiar) but am also frequently asked to
take kids 10 and up to the world of running.
My frame of reference is not good for amounts and frequency of training for
these kids.
I would really appreciate some age appropriate guidelines for boys and girls
and possibly some clinical references/resources I may investigate to increase
my knowledge. thank you in advance for your help.
Thank you in advance for your help,
Glenn Cottrill
Dear
Glenn,
Here's a link for a beginning Triathlon Training schedule by Catalina. The young man in the photos above used this schedule to successfully complete his first tri. He sent us the following note after his event.
Dear KidsRunning.Com,
I thought it was about time to write and thank you for your help in my
triathlon training and let you know how it went.
The training wasn't as hard as I thought thanks to your training
calendar, it actually got really, really fun!!! Having rest days really
helped. The hardest part of the training was the transitions, but
practicing them made it much easier when it came to the actual race. By
the end of my training I felt ready for the event.
Race day weather was perfect but it was about 85 degrees so it got
really hot by the end. There were about 50 kids ages 6-12. The swimming
part was the best but both the biking and the running really tired me
out. We set a goal of me just finishing, but I definitely did better
than I thought by placing 4th in my age group (9-10 year old boys).
It was definitely fun and I can't wait until next summer!
Thanks again for everything!

Glenn, if you are interested in helping kids with just straight running, you'll find many articles on our
Training page. But if you get really serious about training kids to be competitive, then you may consider obtaining a youth coaching credential.
You may also wish to purchase the book TRIATHLONS for kids by Sally Edwards.
Good luck and thanks for taking an interest in our kids.
Run for a lifetime, Carol
It's important to find a way to make kids love running and physical fitness.
