Dear Coach Ed,
Hi,
I have been coaching middle school XC for three seasons. The school is
located in the middle of the city. We have been running endless circles
in
the school yard since it is easier for the parents to pick up the kids
after
practice right after school. THEY ARE BORED!
We start with a warm-up lap and stretches. Then the workout. I am
guessing
that the distance for the "lap" is almost 400 meters. So they have to run
at
> >least 6 laps to get a workout.
Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Martina,
Oh no! Bored kids...let's fix that right away! If you go to
my page, I have two columns that have some ideas.
Games for Middle School XC and New At Coaching XC.
When my team (100 kids
ages 7-14 ) practices for our indoor track season we use a basketball gym
at
the YMCA; 100 kids in a basketball gym running. Picture that! We do not
see a track until our first meet. We invent ways to keep things
interesting
for 6 weeks before our first track meet. When we
stretch and do running drills we have music on. For stretching we use my CD's (calm Enya
type tunes or even classical music). For running drills we use the kids' favorites (loud
and fast music). Perfect for keeping them interested, moving, and having
fun.
Try it. It works.
Good luck,
Coach Ed
