HEALTHY SNACKS
After-school club

applecharts Happy Feet kids add a sticker to their mileage folders each time they bring a healthy snack to club.

Hello Carol,

I am seeking advice on an after-school program we are starting.

Our after-school program is centered around health and fitness activities.

I know kids need an after-school snack, but I'm not sure when the best time to serve it would be; before or after activity?

We have 3:30-5:30 p.m. where activity is from 4-5.

Any suggestions? Your Web site is great!

Thanks a bunch,
Molly

editor Dear Molly,

At our Happy Feet, Healthy Food Kids' Club we snack at 3:30. The kids are hungry after a long day at school and it works well to have them eat their snacks before the actual club starts. So when kids are arriving, checking in, putting their backpacks in the hall, making their name tags, filling out their charts, getting stickers for journaling at home, they eat their snacks.

I haven't seen any ill effects from eating before activity in the last couple of years. It's a fun way to start a club. The kids proudly show me the healthy snacks they bring in.

Just like the McNuggets, this fruit-walnut salad is finger food - fun to eat. Maybe one of your kids will be lucky enough to bring it to after-school club.

And it's packaged neatly - like a little healthy eating kit. A great club activity would be to have children design other healthy eating "kits". What would they put in them? How should they be prepared and packaged?

Good luck with your program,
Carol
