Dear Coach Ed,
I have a daughter that is presently on a under 10 Rep Soccer team, she plays defense. My question is: What is a good running training schedule to follow? How many times a week is reasonable for this age group, and what sort of distance?
The team presently goes for 3k runs once a week along with a 2.5hr practice.(this is off season). I have some concerns that this distance and length of practice is a little extreme for this age group and I wondered if I am being to over protective.
I would be very interested in hearing what your recommendation would be as far as the distance and frequency of the runs are concerned.
Thanks, Jeanette
Jeanette,
A 3K run once a week for an athlete 8 to 10 year old, is not in my opinion extreme. If this is done at a reasonable pace (8.5 to 10 minute mile pace) this is good endurance training for soccer and many other sports. I totally understand your concern of running this after a 2.5 hour practice.
Before I could make a judgment if this is extreme I would have to know how much of those 2.5 hour is really tough physical activity. If your child is enjoying it and does not seem fatigued she is probably fine and the workout suits her. The most important point to consider is if your child is enjoying it.
Good luck on her soccer and my appreciation to you for your concern. When it comes to children in physically demanding sports I encourage all parents to question coaches and monitor children's physical well being.
Good job Mom,
