WEIGHTS FOR KIDS?
and lots more

Dear Coach Ed,

I saw this site on the vlaa Web-site and decided to give it a go!It's an awesome Web site and just want to thank you on how good it is and how much you update it! Anyway I'll tell you about myself. I am 5'10 and wear a size 14 shoe and it's hard to get a good pair of shoes at the moment in my size. What do I do? Anyway about my runs... I run 400m and 800m but have slacked off a bit and I was wondering if I you could help me..... In under13's I just missed out on a medal at the state championships and got 5th in a time of 2 mins 21sec in the 800m and in the 400m I made it to the final and got 8 in 1min.00 and in under 14's and was aiming for a medal in the 800m this year but when I got on the track I got shocking times worse then last year I was running 2.mins 27 sec in the 800m and betta in the 400m 59 secs and just missed the finals..... I'm not sure what happended to me could you answer these questions... what do you think might of happened to me to be running worse? what can I do over the non-athletics season to get even fitter besides football, tennis, and athletics training once a week? Is weight training ok to do at 13 yrs old?if so...... is lift 6kg dumbells and 250 lifts up and down on each arm each week good or bad for me? What is a good weight for a guy running 800m, and 400m?is 56kg ok? Does doing to much weights stop your growth? and if you have any more tips please post them on the site.

Thank you,
Cameron

Cameron,
Such enthusiasm I don't know where to begin. First of all if you check out the advice columns from Coach Mick and myself you will find the answer to most of your questions. I couldn't possibly answer all those questions but I do want to offer some advice.

About weight training? Do strength training instead. Stay away from the weights and do push ups, chin ups, crunches, and all the different variations of strength exercises you can do without weights.

If you want to run fast 400 and 800 meters you need strength but should not "bulk up". By doing the strength training you will get strong and not bulk up. During the off season run some longer runs at a nice comfortable pace to build up your endurance. Yes! you do need endurance for 800 meters.

Good luck,
Coach Ed
