BUILDING UP STAMINA DURING SOCCER
What Ed has to say

Dear Coach Ed,

Hello-I have an 7.5 year old son who plays soccer and is active in other sports like rollerblading, swimming, kite flying and biking. Is there something that would help to build up his stamina during a soccer game or is it just part of him growing up? He does well at the beginning of the game but soon tires out towards the half.

Thanks,
Larry

Hi Larry,
Larry, I have quite a few kids on my youth track team that have tremendously improved their endurance in sports like soccer and basketball by distance running. Not don't be alarmed I am only talking about running 1 or 2 miles for a seven year old.

For this to work, you have to make it fun and increase the distance slowly. To make it fun run with him or ride a bicycle while he is running.

Start of by running 5 minutes 2 days a week. The following week run one day 5 minutes and 10 minutes another day (be sure to give him encouragement and praise for this increase). The week after, he will probably be able to run 10 minutes two days a week. Keep the runs slow enough so you and your son can converse and run the distance non-stop. That will give a big boost to his endurance.

This use of running as a training tool to help performance in other sports is a technique professional athletes use. Be sure to tell him that. Have fun with this too Larry.

Good luck,
Coach Ed
