MEASURING A COURSE
for that race or fun run

carol in class Dear Carol,
I am writing in concern to setting up a 5k run/walk. This is a community race being held at my college and the surrounding area. I have a lot of help and suppport. I don't know if you would be the right person to contact because it is mostly an adult race, but I read one of your replies and it seems like you could help me out. I have everything organized for the most part, but I am having trouble setting up the route. I live in Erie, PA and there is still alot of snow around the area. The race is in May, so I need a route by the end of Feb. I think that I have a possible route in mind, but the problem is, is that know one has used this route before, therefore I don't know how long it is. I need to know another way to track the mileage besides using a car. How can I do this? Do you have any ideas? I have contacted the people that own the land, and they said that it was fine that we used it, I just really need a route setup. I know it doesn't seem like it would be that hard, but I am surely having trouble. If you could get back to me or know of someone else that could help me out that would be great!

Thanks for your time,
Danielle

editor Dear Danielle,
This article tells all about measuring the course: Course Certification
If you don't need it certified, then a bike without the special instrument or the surveyor's wheel will do. You can always call your local USATF organization or a running club for help.
Contact the local high school PE dept or the town rec dept. for a surveyor's wheel to borrow. I hope this helps.

Good luck,
Carol
