Hello and welcome! Here's a little about the Founding Editor of KidsRunning.Com (me). Thanks for visiting the site. I hope you come back often. |
January 29, 2008 RUNNER-WRITER-ILLUSTRATOR I started running in my 40s and don't plan on ever stopping. I run with my dog and my schoolchildren. When I'm out on my runs I get ideas for my Web site designs, illustrations, poetry, and stories. I've just completed my third book to complete my "healthily-ever-after" trilogy - three books, three genres, all with the same message for kids - to stay fit through exercise and heathy eating.
KIDS RUNNING: Have Fun, Get Faster & Go Farther This book is a culmination of ten years of work with children's running on the Web and in the schools. The book follows 4 kid-runners as they get started, run & walk, jog, sprint, and cycle their way to running success. It's full of poetry, jump-rope rhymes, riddles, and packed with information. Ed Poirier (KR's Coach Ed) has contributed some of his best tips to this book.
TEACHER
Teaching children with learning disabilities is my main dedication . I love teaching children to read, write, spell, and do math. I also take my kids running. We journal on Fridays and that writing is most often about running.
PMC RIDER
I ride a bike in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge each summer to raise funds for Dana Farber via the Jimmy Fund. This is my way of giving back. The funds raised will help find a cure for cancer. The bike ride in a crowd of thousands makes me feel like a part of a huge team all striving to do an extreme athletic event for a good cause. The last 5 times I've completed the PMC, I've cycled 192 miles in two days. This summer, I will do the 1-day 112 mile ride from Sturbridge, MA to Bourne, MA.
MY FIRST BOOK - HAPPY FEET
The activities of running and journaling became so popular at my school that I started an after-school club where I use my first book. It's the Happy Feet, Healthy Food Kids' Club. Kids eat healthy snacks, read their Happy Feet books, play running games, train for a fun run, go on nature hikes, journal in their Happy Feet books, and finally listen to me read a chapter of my middle book, my middle child, "The Treasure of Health and Happiness".
TREASURE- MY CHAPTER BOOK This is a story of a young girl who is about to discover the joys of healthy eating, running, and physical exercise. Together with her dog, she goes on a life-changing journey.
This is a chapter book for elementary aged school children written at the mid-3rd grade level. But even younger children at my school who have read it (boys and girls alike) , like to carry it around the school and wave it at me when they see me. Oh, I like that! If you read this book, please send me a note to let me know.
You can find free printables here to accompany the chapters of the TREASURE book.
MY FAMILY
I have two of my own children. Josie, a stay-at-home mother (best mother in the world), a grandson named Alex, granddaughter names Hannah, and a son named Keith, my MIT grad and bike-racer extraordinaire.
I am married and hope to live happily and healthily ever after in the small town of Sturbridge, MA (alias Fiskdale). with my husband Kevin.
READING
I love to read and most recently read most of Elizabeth Berg's novels - my favorite character is young Kate from her earlier novels.
Enjoy your visit on the KR Web site. If you can't find what you are looking for, please use the google search at the bottom of the home page or send me an email.
